POSITIVE MENTAL ATTITUDE
The Foundation of Success

πŸ“– 10 minute read

There Comes a Moment

There comes a moment in every life when circumstances stop moving and you must.

For me, that moment arrived the day my brother died.

His name was Tolik. We grew up as immigrant kids from Ukraine, and I always felt like an outsider looking in. School never fit me. Friendships were a struggle. The only person who made me feel understood was my older brother β€” the one who sacrificed everything so I could chase what we were told was success.

And I did chase it. Google. SAP. The degrees. The corporate ladder. I checked every box. But here is what nobody tells you: you can have everything the world calls success and still feel like you are failing at life.

While I was away at a conference, Tolik took his own life.

What followed was years of pain, anger, guilt, and a low hum of self-betrayal that Silicon Valley salaries could not quiet. Then, during a meditation ceremony in Ashland, Oregon, something finally shifted. I saw my mind clearly for the first time β€” like a fly trapped against a glass window. The escape had always been there. I simply had never stepped back far enough to see it.

In that moment, I felt Tolik’s presence. Not as memory. As warmth. Like he wrapped his arms around me and whispered, “You can stop running now.”

And I understood something foundational: my attitude β€” my inner state β€” was the only part of my reality no one could take from me. When I learned to master it, my entire perspective changed.

That is why Covenant of Education exists. That is why the first of our 7 Teachings is Positive Mental Attitude. Not because it sounds nice. Because without it, nothing else works.

“Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”
β€” Viktor Frankl

What PMA Really Means

A Positive Mental Attitude is not toxic positivity. It is not pretending problems do not exist. It is not plastering a smile on your face while you are falling apart.

PMA is inner leadership. It is the conscious decision to direct your mind toward what you want, and away from what you do not want. That sounds simple. It is simple. But it is not easy β€” because your brain is wired to scan for threats, not possibilities.

PMA Is Not:

  • Denying that problems exist
  • Toxic positivity that invalidates real emotions
  • Naive optimism without action
  • Ignoring difficult realities

PMA Is:

  • Choosing to focus on what you can control
  • Seeing challenges as temporary and solvable
  • Believing in your capacity to learn and grow
  • Taking responsibility for your mindset and reactions
  • Maintaining hope while taking action

The Science Beneath It

This is not motivational fluff. There is real neuroscience at work.

Your brain has a built-in filtering system called the Reticular Activating System. It determines what information your conscious mind pays attention to. If you believe opportunities are everywhere, your RAS will help you spot them. If you believe the world is against you, you will find endless evidence to confirm it.

Repeated thought patterns also create neural pathways. The more a thought is thought, the easier it becomes to think again. Negative thinking compounds. Positive thinking compounds. Your mind will manifest whatever you feed it, good or bad. There may be a delay β€” call it delta T β€” but the results always follow the focus.

The People You Admire Were Once Where You Are

Every person you admire faced a version of the life you are living now.

Jim Carrey was homeless. He lived in a van while his parents were unemployed, and he was battling depression. He practiced visualization every day and wrote himself a ten-million-dollar check that he carried in his wallet. He became the highest-paid comedian in Hollywood.

Cristiano Ronaldo grew up poor in Madeira, could not afford basic things, and was diagnosed with a heart condition at fifteen. His work ethic was brutal. His mental toughness was absolute. He became a global icon.

Arnold Schwarzenegger came from a poor village in Austria. No prospects. A thick accent. People mocked him constantly. He believed in himself with a conviction that bordered on irrational. World champion. Movie star. Governor.

Jack Ma failed his school exams and was rejected from thirty jobs β€” including KFC. No money, no connections, no resume. His positive attitude was unshakeable. He built Alibaba.

J.K. Rowling was a single mother on welfare. Twelve publishers rejected her manuscript. She wrote in cafΓ©s with a baby stroller beside her because her apartment was too cold to stay in. She became the first billionaire author in history.

The pattern is always the same. PMA is the operating system beneath every one of these stories.

The Model: Labyrinth vs. Map

Most people navigate their inner world like a dark labyrinth β€” repeating old fears, following inherited routes, reacting instead of choosing.

With PMA, you replace the labyrinth with a map.

The limiting-belief map is the one most people are handed. Many paths are blocked. Dead ends everywhere. Narrow streets that circle back to where you started. This map keeps guiding you to the same stuck places β€” not because you cannot move, but because the map does not show you another way forward.

The positive-belief map is different. It has marked trails to new places, with multiple routes to the same destination. Some paths are longer. Some are harder. Some are temporarily closed. But the key difference is this: the destination is always reachable.

That is what a positive belief system gives you. Options. Possibilities. Direction.

PMA is the act of choosing which map you navigate with. Most people do not realize they have a choice. They think the labyrinth is just how life works. But it is not reality β€” it is a map. And maps can be replaced.

The Practice: The 3-3-3 Exercise

Here is your first deep internal reset. It takes ten minutes, and it will change how you see your own life.

Sit alone in a quiet place. Silence distractions. Open a notebook or a blank page. Then write, without editing or judging:

  • 3 things you want to HAVE
  • 3 things you want to DO
  • 3 qualities you want to BE

When you finish, read everything slowly. Notice which items create energy in your chest, not tension in your mind. The ones that light you up are your truth. The ones that create anxiety are probably somebody else’s expectations.

From those insights, define your top three goals for the next three years.

The 6 Steps Toward PMA

  1. Know what you want. Clarify your desires and set clear goals.
  2. Believe you will receive. Unwavering faith in achieving them.
  3. Express gratitude early. Appreciate as if your goals are already achieved.
  4. Act on intuition. Follow your instincts. Take inspired action.
  5. Expect challenges. Tests strengthen your resolve. They are not stop signs.
  6. Persevere without surrender. Push through difficulties. Never give up.

When PMA Gets Hard

Let me be honest: maintaining a Positive Mental Attitude is hard, especially when life is difficult.

When bills are overdue, when you are exhausted, when people around you are negative, when you have been rejected again, when nothing seems to be working β€” in those moments, PMA feels impossible.

Here is what I want you to know: you do not have to feel positive all the time.

You are allowed to feel frustrated. Angry. Scared. Sad. Those emotions are valid and human.

But here is the key distinction: after you feel those emotions, you get to choose what you do next. You get to decide whether to stay stuck in negativity or to look for the next step forward. PMA is not about never feeling negative emotions. It is about not letting those emotions make permanent decisions for you.

“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t β€” you’re right.”
β€” Henry Ford

Emotional Intelligence: The Next Layer

PMA gives you the ground β€” your stable internal foundation. But life will still test you. That is where Emotional Intelligence begins.

PMA builds your inner strength. Emotional Intelligence teaches you how to use that strength when life challenges your peace.

  • Self-Awareness β€” Knowing what you feel and why. Recognizing when frustration comes from self-pressure, not from others.
  • Self-Management β€” Guiding your reactions before they guide you. Pausing before you speak. Choosing calm over impulse.
  • Social Awareness β€” Reading the emotional climate around you. Noticing tension in a room and adjusting your presence accordingly.
  • Relationship Management β€” Influencing interactions with clarity, compassion, and stability. Resolving conflict without aggression or avoidance.

Your positive mental attitude shapes your personal brand. It draws people toward you. Foster a presence that is calm, optimistic, and steady β€” and watch how the world responds differently.

PMA in the Context of the Other Teachings

Positive Mental Attitude is the first teaching because it enables all the others:

  • You need PMA to develop Purity of Thought (Teaching 2) β€” to clear the noise and trust your perception
  • You need PMA to create Vision (Teaching 3) β€” to imagine a future better than your present
  • You need PMA to find Courage (Teaching 4) β€” to believe action is worth taking despite fear
  • You need PMA to develop Charisma (Teaching 5) β€” to inspire others, you must first believe in yourself
  • You need PMA to build Sanctuary (Teaching 6) β€” to create space for growth, you must believe you are worth it
  • You need PMA to maintain Rhythm (Teaching 7) β€” to persist over time, you must believe the journey is worth it

Without PMA, the other teachings are just nice ideas. With PMA, they become transformative practices.

Your Attitude Is Your Choice

Here is the most empowering truth about Positive Mental Attitude: it is entirely within your control.

You cannot control the economy. You cannot control other people’s opinions. You cannot control whether you were born into privilege or poverty. You cannot control most of what happens to you.

But you can control how you respond. You can control what you choose to focus on. You can control whether you see yourself as a victim or a creator of your future.

That is simultaneously the most challenging and the most liberating thing about PMA: it is all on you.

The Ripple Effect

When you develop a Positive Mental Attitude, the benefits extend far beyond yourself:

  • Better relationships. People are drawn to those with steady energy.
  • More opportunities. Optimistic people spot opportunities others miss.
  • Increased resilience. PMA helps you bounce back from setbacks faster.
  • Better health. Optimism correlates with better physical outcomes.
  • Contagious positivity. Your attitude reshapes everyone around you.

When you transform your mindset, you do not just change your own life. You change the lives of everyone you touch.

“The greatest discovery of all time is that a person can change their future by merely changing their attitude.”
β€” Oprah Winfrey
